Favorite Houseplants: An Interior Designer's Perspective

As an interior designer, I've had the pleasure of working with numerous clients to create their dream spaces. One of the most important elements in any room is the addition of plants. Not only do they purify the air and improve the aesthetic, but they also bring a sense of life and energy to the space. In this blog post, I'll be sharing my favorite houseplants and how I incorporate them into my interior design projects.

When it comes to choosing the right plants for your space, it's essential to consider the style and aesthetic you're going for. For example, if you're aiming for a Scandinavian minimalism look, you may want to opt for plants with clean lines and simple shapes, such as succulents or cacti. On the other hand, if you're going for a more lush and tropical vibe, you may want to choose plants with bright colors and intricate patterns, such as ferns or peace lilies.




One of my personal favorite houseplants is the snake plant. Not only is it incredibly low-maintenance, but it's also great for air purification and can thrive in a variety of lighting conditions. I love incorporating snake plants into my designs because they add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any room.


Another favorite of mine is the spider plant. Not only is it easy to care for, but it's also great for air purification and can be propagated easily by dividing the plantlets that grow on the ends of its stems. I often use spider plants in my designs to add a touch of whimsy and playfulness to a space.


When it comes to incorporating plants into your interior design, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, consider the lighting in the room. Most plants require bright, indirect light to thrive, so make sure to place them near a window or use a grow light. Second, think about the style and aesthetic you're going for. For example, if you're going for a minimalist look, you may want to choose plants with clean lines and simple shapes. And finally, don't be afraid to get creative and experiment with different plant combinations and arrangements.

For example, one client shared with me the importance of the peace lily in her family's cultural heritage. According to her, the peace lily is a symbol of peace and tranquility, and is often given as a gift to new mothers to bring good luck and prosperity to their families.


Another client shared with me the significance of the snake plant in her African heritage. According to her, the snake plant is a symbol of good luck and protection, and is often placed in homes and businesses to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune.


These are just a few examples of the many ways in which plants are used in different cultures. Whether it's as a symbol of love, luck, or protection, plants have the power to bring people together and create a sense of community and connection.
