Turkish mosaic chandeliers — globe or teardrop fixtures wrapped in hand-cut colored glass tesserae set in plaster on a copper or brass armature — are an Anatolian craft tradition centered in Istanbul and the village workshops around Göreme. The 2010s explosion of Etsy reproductions has flooded the market with mass-imported versions; the authentic craft still exists if you know where to source.

Authentic Craft
The real piece is hand-cut glass from a Turkish artisanal glass works (the Pasabahce-trained tradition), set by hand in plaster on a brass armature with a hand-soldered electrical assembly. The tesserae are slightly variable in size and color — that's the tell. Mass-import versions use machine-cut glass that's perfectly uniform and read as plastic-uniform at five feet. Authentic mid-size (16-24") chandelier: $400-$1,200. Mass import: $80-$200.
Light Quality
The colored glass tesserae act as filters — light passing through any single piece is colored by that glass. The result is a complex multi-color pattern projected onto walls and ceilings around the fixture. The light is not task-grade. Bulb spec: 2700K-3000K warm-white LED at modest lumen output (60-100W incandescent equivalent). Higher output washes out the color projection.
Where It Belongs
Entry foyers — high ceiling, single statement, deliberate effect. Dining rooms with a long table — the color projection becomes part of the dining experience. Reading nooks and quiet rooms — the light is for atmosphere, not for reading. Never in a working kitchen, never as primary task lighting, never as the only fixture in a large room — Turkish chandeliers are accents, not workhorses.
