Carpet in bedrooms was the American residential default from 1960 to 2010. Hardwood has been gaining since the 2010s and is now the more-common bedroom spec in higher-end new construction. The honest tradeoff is acoustic, allergenic, thermal, and resale — not just aesthetic.

Acoustic Reality
Carpet absorbs footfall, conversation, and HVAC noise. Hardwood reflects all of it. A bedroom over a kitchen or family room with hardwood will transmit cooking and TV sound; with carpet over pad, the transmission is much reduced. The mitigation for hardwood is a thick area rug (8×10 or 9×12 under the bed) plus engineered acoustic underlayment during the floor install. Done well, hardwood + acoustic underlayment + rug approaches the carpet performance; done cheaply, the room is loud.
Allergens
Carpet captures dust, dust mites, pet dander, and pollen. The vacuuming protocol matters: HEPA-filtered upright vacuum, twice weekly, with annual deep clean. With that protocol, carpet is no worse than hardwood for indoor air quality. Without it, carpet is genuinely worse. Most homeowners do not maintain the protocol.
Resale
Higher-tier appraisers and buyers in California in 2026 mostly read hardwood throughout as the higher-value finish. Carpet in primary and secondary bedrooms is now read as a downgrade in homes above ~$1M. This is a regional and price-point conversation, but the trend has tipped.
Thermal and Underfoot
Carpet is warmer underfoot, particularly in homes with slab-on-grade construction. Hardwood is colder unless paired with radiant heat or a thick rug. For households with young children or older homeowners, the warmth difference is real.
