Unlike the tightly packed neighborhoods of the East Bay hills or the more formal suburban layouts of the Peninsula, Antioch’s premium areas blend modern comfort with a grounded, functional aesthetic. Newer developments in neighborhoods like Black Diamond Estates often feature sloped lots that require creative solutions to maintain privacy and outdoor access, while older homes, particularly in the downtown or northern areas, retain mid-century charm with their open layouts, which lend themselves well to contemporary updates like warm wood tones, reclaimed wood elements, and built-in storage that nods to the region’s farming past. The inland climate, with its hot, dry summers and cooler evenings, influences how spaces are designed: outdoor areas must be shaded and ventilated to stay comfortable year-round, whether through covered patios, pergolas, or hillside terraces that make the most of natural breezes. The views here, whether of the distant Mount Diablo range or the expansive greenery of local parks, are often framed as part of the living experience, reinforcing the connection between home and landscape.

My approach to designing in Antioch begins with understanding how each property interacts with its surroundings, both physically and culturally. For hillside homes, I focus on fluid circulation that follows the land’s natural rise and fall, often incorporating multi-level living areas or outdoor staircases that feel intentional rather than forced. Materials play a key role in tying indoor and outdoor spaces together: locally sourced stone with warm, earthy hues, weathered wood for decks and ceilings, and large-format tile that echoes the texture of the surrounding hills. In older homes, I preserve original architectural details, exposed beams, original hardwood floors, or vintage light fixtures, while adding modern layers like matte finishes, streamlined cabinetry, and smart storage to keep the space open yet functional. Lighting is carefully considered to complement Antioch’s dramatic sunsets and long evenings, with a mix of ambient warmth, task lighting for daily activities, and outdoor fixtures that highlight architectural features or create focal points like fire pits. Since outdoor living is essential, I design these areas as seamless extensions of the home, whether through a kitchen that opens to a covered dining terrace or a living room that flows into a shaded courtyard with built-in cooking stations. The goal is to create a home that feels lived-in and intentional, not just a collection of spaces.

Antioch’s design ethos stands apart from other Northern California regions by rejecting both the overly minimalist Peninsula aesthetic and the tech-driven modernism of the Bay Area. While neighborhoods like Atherton or Woodside often favor cool, neutral tones and sleek surfaces, Antioch embraces warmth, rich terracotta tiles, deep accent colors, and textured materials like linen, wool, and hammered metal that add depth and character. The emphasis here isn’t on sterile "open concept" living but on "connected" spaces where rooms maintain their own identity while flowing together naturally. Unlike the urban infill projects of Oakland or Berkeley, where design must work within tight constraints, Antioch allows for bolder, more expansive gestures: soaring ceilings in great rooms, grand staircases, and occasional luxuries like built-in wine cellars or home theaters that reflect the community’s love of entertainment and gathering. The inland climate also shapes design choices, prioritizing temperature control through high-performance windows, cross-ventilation strategies, and outdoor spaces that can be enjoyed in all seasons. Ultimately, Antioch’s design approach mirrors its residents: practical, welcoming, and unpretentious, with a focus on creating homes that are both luxurious and deeply functional.
