The 2020s contemporary stone fireplace is a single material gesture — a slab of stone running floor-to-ceiling around the firebox, with no mantel and no surround molding. The aesthetic is clean; the specification is complex; the structural and venting reality determines whether the move actually works.

Slab Selection and Bookmatching
3 cm slab is the residential standard for full-height fireplace surrounds. Bookmatched means the fabricator selects two adjacent slabs from the same block and opens them like a book — the veining mirrors across the centerline. This requires the supplier to identify and reserve a paired slab pair before the project orders. Lead time runs 8-16 weeks. Stones that bookmatch well: Calacatta, Statuario, Patagonia quartzite, Cipollino. Limestone and travertine generally do not bookmatch dramatically.
Honed vs Leathered vs Polished
Honed: smooth matte finish, hides etching, the contemporary default. Leathered: textured matte finish with subtle relief, hides more (fingerprints, soft wear), more expensive to fabricate. Polished: gloss finish, shows everything, reads dated in residential fireplace applications. For most contemporary residential specs, honed is correct.
Structural Backing and Heat
A 3 cm stone slab weighs ~18 lb/sqft. A 9' tall by 6' wide surround is ~970 lb. The framing behind the surround must carry that load — typically 2×6 or 2×8 stud bay with steel plate reinforcement and through-bolting to the structure. Fire-rating: the stone must be set 4" from the firebox per California Building Code Chapter 28 for mantel and surround clearances. Direct-vent gas firebox simplifies this; wood-burning is stricter.
