Delft tile is hand-painted tin-glazed earthenware from the Dutch city of Delft, in continuous production since the 1640s. Royal Delft (De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles, founded 1653) is the only producer in continuous operation from the original era. The blue-on-white pattern is recognizable, the craftsmanship is real, and the application to a 2026 California fireplace surround is a deliberate heritage move.

Authentic vs Reproduction
Royal Delft tiles are still hand-painted in the Delft workshop with a cobalt-blue mineral pigment on a tin-glazed ground. Each tile is signed by the painter. The visible brush strokes, the slight irregularities in the pattern, and the depth of the glaze are the tells. Pricing for genuine Royal Delft runs $80-$300 per tile depending on pattern complexity. Reproductions (Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese) are screen-printed or transfer-printed and cost $5-$30 per tile. Convincing in photographs; identifiable at handling distance.
Period and Style Fit
Delft tiles belong on Dutch Colonial, Georgian, Federal, and Colonial Revival fireplaces — periods when the original Dutch trade with America was active and Delft tile was a luxury import. They also work in deliberately heritage-modern contexts (a clean modern firebox with a Delft tile border above the firebox opening — the contrast is the design feature). They do not work on craftsman, mission, mid-century, or contemporary fireplaces — wrong period, wrong context.
Installation Reality
Delft tiles are typically 5"x5" or 5.25"x5.25" (130mm or 135mm square). They are set with thinset on a cementitious substrate (Durock, HardieBacker), with very thin grout joints (1/16" or 1/32") to preserve the integrity of the pattern. The substrate must be perfectly flat — the tiles are thin and any irregularity in the substrate telegraphs. A skilled tile-setter with heritage-tile experience is required; this is not a job for a general tile crew.
