My approach to El Cerrito design is rooted in three principles: honoring the bones of the home, balancing local craftsmanship with global influences, and creating spaces that feel both timeless and effortlessly lived-in. I start by stripping back what doesn’t serve the home’s original character, whether that’s peeling back layers of outdated finishes to reveal original woodwork, restoring a built-in bookshelf, or preserving a vintage door that adds depth to a space. For materials, I lean into the Bay Area’s natural palette: warm whites, soft grays, and muted earth tones that complement the existing architecture, but I also introduce subtle modern touches, like a sculptural light fixture in a sunroom or a floating shelf in a Craftsman dining nook, to keep the design feeling current. In the hills, I maximize natural light and views with strategic window treatments and outdoor living extensions, while in the flatter areas, I focus on creating cozy, multi-functional spaces that make the most of smaller footprints. Every detail, from the hardware on a built-in cabinet to the texture of a throw pillow, is chosen to feel intentional, not imposed. The goal? A home that feels like a second skin, familiar, comforting, and uniquely *El Cerrito*.
