My design approach in Los Altos centers on three key principles: honoring the home’s original character, fostering harmony with the surroundings, and ensuring modern practicality. I prioritize preserving the home’s historic elements, whether that means restoring original built-ins, maintaining vintage fixtures, or keeping natural materials like stone and wood, while thoughtfully introducing updates that complement rather than compete with the existing architecture. For example, reclaimed wood accents might pair with contemporary textures, or a classic fireplace could be reimagined with a minimalist mantel to bridge old and new. Since the landscape is such a defining feature of Los Altos, I also focus on creating fluid transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, such as through floor-to-ceiling glass doors or outdoor living areas that feel like natural extensions of the home. Finally, I emphasize smart, unobtrusive functionality, custom storage that respects the home’s scale, flexible layouts for multi-generational living, and integrated technology that enhances comfort without drawing attention. The aim is to create a home that feels effortlessly elevated, not like a staged display.
What sets Los Altos apart in the Northern California design landscape is its commitment to a more subdued, place-specific aesthetic rather than trend-driven statements. While cities like San Francisco or Silicon Valley often favor bold, high-tech minimalism or industrial materials like steel and concrete, Los Altos leans into a warmer, more organic approach shaped by its climate and topography. The region’s mild but distinct seasons, warm, dry summers and cool, damp winters, favor durable, low-maintenance materials that age beautifully, such as weathered cedar or honed travertine. Color palettes tend to be softer, drawing inspiration from the surrounding hills with muted greens, warm taupes, and deep blues, rather than the stark contrasts found in other markets. Furniture and decor also reflect this timelessness, with an emphasis on well-crafted pieces that stand the test of time. Ultimately, the goal is to craft a sanctuary that feels inherently suited to the landscape and lifestyle of Los Altos, a space that is luxurious yet grounded, where every detail reinforces a sense of place.
