The city’s layout, with its winding streets and varied elevations, means privacy and natural light are key priorities, but so is a sense of community, whether in a tight-knit neighborhood like Mountain View or along the quieter residential blocks near the downtown core. Designing here means honoring the home’s original bones, whether it’s a 1920s bungalow with a sunroom or a contemporary renovation that preserves the integrity of the original structure while adapting to modern needs.

My approach to Martinez design begins with an understanding of how the home fits into its surroundings, both physically and culturally. In Alhambra Valley, where the terrain rises and the views are a major draw, I focus on creating fluid, open layouts that make the most of the space without overwhelming it. Built-in cabinetry, floating shelves, and multi-functional furniture help maintain a sense of coziness, while large windows and skylights maximize natural light, which is especially valuable in a climate that can be sunny but occasionally overcast. In the flatter, more densely built areas near downtown, where homes might have lower ceilings and smaller footprints, I use vertical storage, tall bookshelves, and strategic lighting to create the illusion of height and openness. Textures play a crucial role, think a plush area rug over polished concrete floors, a leather sofa paired with a reclaimed wood accent wall, or a mix of matte and glossy finishes to add depth. Outdoor spaces are just as important, so I design patios and decks to feel like natural extensions of the home, using durable materials like weather-resistant wicker, fire pits for cooler evenings, and native plants that thrive in the region’s mild, dry summers and cool, damp winters.

What sets Martinez apart in the broader Bay Area is its design ethos, which balances craftsmanship with understated elegance. Unlike the sleek minimalism often seen in coastal cities or the bold, maximalist trends in some urban centers, Martinez homes favor warmth and authenticity. I prioritize locally sourced materials, such as travertine from nearby quarries, sustainably harvested wood, or reclaimed barn wood, that age gracefully and tell a story. Decor is curated thoughtfully, with an emphasis on heirloom-quality pieces over disposable trends; a well-loved armchair or a family heirloom feels more at home here than a carefully staged gallery wall. The area’s agricultural roots influence the design language, with nods to rustic charm, like exposed beams or farmhouse sinks, softened by the Bay Area’s penchant for clean lines and functional simplicity. The goal is to create spaces that feel intentional and lived-in, where the design supports the home’s history, the family’s daily rhythm, and the valley’s natural light, rather than competing with it.
