Meanwhile, the more residential character of Millbrae Highlands and Meadow Glen emphasizes classic architectural details, exposed beams, built-in shelving, and warm wood tones, that evoke a sense of timeless craftsmanship. Unlike the sleek, high-tech modernism of nearby Silicon Valley or the bold, urban-driven designs of San Francisco, Millbrae’s aesthetic leans into a quieter elegance, where materials and proportions feel intentional yet unpretentious.

My approach to designing in Millbrae begins with a deep appreciation for the existing structure, whether it’s a vintage ranch with original built-ins or a newer custom home that prioritizes indoor-outdoor living. I emphasize layering textures and materials that align with the neighborhood’s heritage, such as natural wood cabinetry paired with matte finishes or terrazzo flooring that nods to the area’s Mid-Century roots while remaining durable for everyday use. Lighting plays a crucial role in softening the dramatic angles of hillside homes, with warm, diffused fixtures like sculptural pendants or floor lamps creating a cozy ambiance. Outdoor spaces, often central to Millbrae’s lifestyle, are designed with weather-resistant yet refined materials, ensuring they feel as polished as the interiors. Flow and privacy are also key; I work to refine layouts so they feel organic, whether through open-concept living areas or more traditional floor plans, while incorporating elements like room dividers, strategic window treatments, and landscaped buffers to preserve the seclusion that defines these neighborhoods.
