My design approach in Nevada City centers on three key ideas: honoring history with purpose, adapting to the Sierra’s climate, and weaving in personal narratives. Whether working with a century-old home on Broad Street or a new build in the Deer Creek area, I prioritize preserving original character, restoring hardwood floors, salvaging vintage fixtures, or integrating modern upgrades like radiant heating beneath restored surfaces. The region’s climate demands thoughtful solutions: passive solar design to capture winter sunlight, cross-ventilation for occasional summer warmth, and outdoor spaces that seamlessly extend living into the crisp mountain air. I also layer in elements that reflect Nevada City’s duality, rustic and refined, like a reclaimed barn door in a downtown kitchen, a stone hearth surrounded by local artwork, or a mudroom that holds both hiking gear and heirloom skis. The aim is a home that feels both rooted in tradition and uniquely personal.
What sets Nevada City apart from other Northern California design scenes is its rejection of generic trends in favor of adaptive, land-informed solutions. Unlike the open-plan minimalism of urban centers or the farmhouse revivalism of wine country, the approach here is flexible, responding to the needs of mountain living. In the Deer Creek area, where privacy and nature dominate, I design for expansive views and durable materials that withstand the elements, while in Historic Downtown, I enhance existing character with custom millwork or color palettes that honor the past while feeling contemporary. Cozy, defined spaces, like a gathering hearth or a well-worn dining table, take precedence over sprawling open layouts, reflecting the community’s values. The result is a home that isn’t just a structure, but a thoughtful sanctuary attuned to the quiet pace and natural beauty of the Sierra foothills.
