I focus on how interiors flow into the outdoors, using large sliding glass doors to dissolve boundaries between rooms and terraces while incorporating custom window treatments, like linen drapes or woven shades, to moderate the intensity of sunlight. Materials play a crucial role, with locally quarried stone for fireplaces, walnut from regional mills, and durable finishes that withstand seasonal shifts, from chilly mornings to warm afternoons. Since many Sonoma homes serve as gathering places for family and guests, I design flexible layouts that accommodate both grand entertaining and quiet moments, such as a cozy reading nook or a spacious kitchen island that doubles as a prep area for holiday meals. The aim is to create a home that feels seamlessly integrated into the landscape, whether enjoyed during a quiet evening on the deck or a lively dinner party in the great room.
Sonoma’s design philosophy stands apart from other Northern California regions by prioritizing authenticity and a deep sense of place over fleeting trends. While Napa’s aesthetic often leans toward bold, polished luxury, think gleaming marble and curated art collections, Sonoma’s approach is more understated, rooted in craftsmanship and a connection to the land. The climate also guides design choices, with strategies for year-round comfort, such as cross-ventilation for summer heat and cozy fireplaces for cooler evenings.
