Pocket-door cabinetry — doors that open then slide back into the cabinet body, hiding their face — has been a kitchen-design move since the 1990s. Modern hardware (Blum Aventos, Häfele Hawa Concepta, Salice Pacta) makes it reliable, but the cost is real: 2-3× a standard hinged-door cabinet for the equivalent volume. Three use cases earn that premium; most others don't.

Where It Pays Back
Appliance garages on the countertop — coffee station, toaster, blender, stand mixer hidden behind a single retractable face. The morning ritual of the counter-clutter disappears. Butler bars — glassware, decanters, ice maker behind a single face that opens to reveal a working bar. Walk-through pantries off the kitchen — the pocket door slides clear of the opening so the cook isn't stepping around a swung door.
Where It Doesn't
Under-counter base cabinets. Upper wall cabinets that aren't storing display-worthy contents. Anywhere the cabinet contents need frequent multi-handed access — pocket doors are slow to operate compared to a hinged door, and the "flip up, slide in" gesture gets old. The marketing photographs make pocket doors look magical; daily use confirms they belong only where the magic earns its cost.
Hardware Spec
Blum Aventos HF for upper retraction; Häfele Hawa Concepta for vertical pocket doors. Both German-engineered, both expensive. The motorized version (touch-to-open) is another premium and another point of failure — most installs go with manual operation. The cabinet interior depth must accommodate the door in its pocket, which means losing 4-6" of usable interior depth versus a hinged-door cabinet of the same footprint.

The Folsom tract kitchens are visually busy with appliances on the counter; clearing the counter into a pocket-door garage transforms the kitchen at a much lower cost than a full layout change.
