Hospitality interior design lives on guest-retention metrics — ADR, RevPAR, online review averages. Every detail in a hotel room is engineered for repeated short-term use, daily housekeeping, and to land on social media. Most of that engineering is transferable to residential bedrooms; some of it is wrong.

Lighting Layers
Hotel rooms have three independent lighting circuits — ambient ceiling, task at the bed (reading), and accent (mirror, art, statement fixture). Every circuit is dimmable, every switch is at the bed or the door, and the bedside fixture is articulating so the guest can aim it. Most residential bedrooms have one circuit on one switch with no dimming and a fixed bedside lamp. The hotel layering is the single biggest upgrade a residential bedroom takes.
Hospitality-Spec Materials
Performance velvet for upholstery (Crypton, Sunbrella, InsideOut). Solid-surface or quartz countertops in the bath instead of stone. Outlets at the bedside with USB-C and standard 110V at handle-height (not knee-height). Blackout drapery as the primary window treatment, not as an upgrade. These specifications all transfer to residential at lower cost than the hotel-trade negotiated rates.
What Doesn't Transfer
Generic art. Pillow-to-pillow color matching. The over-styled multi-pillow display. Single light-temperature throughout. Hotels work in compressed time — guests arrive, see the room for thirty seconds, decide if it's "nice." Residential rooms are seen daily for a decade. The hospitality cliches that read as "hotel-y" rather than "designed" are what to leave behind.
