Field Note · Architectural Style
Chalet architecture is alpine vernacular — Swiss, French, Bavarian, Tyrolean — developed over centuries to handle deep snow loads, steep terrain, and short building seasons. The 2020s American interpretation runs from authentic timber-framed mountain homes in Tahoe and Mammoth to suburban tract homes painted dark brown with white trim. The gap between the two is structural, not cosmetic.

Structural Honesty
Real chalets are post-and-beam timber-framed — visible large-section timbers (8×12 or larger) carrying the roof load, exposed both inside and outside. The roof pitch is 12:12 to 18:12 for snow shedding. The roof overhang is deep (3-6') to protect the timber-clad walls from snowmelt. None of this is stylistic; it's structural response to the alpine climate. A chalet without the timber framing and deep overhang is a stucco house with brown trim.
Material Palette
Heavy timber framing (Douglas fir, larch, oak). Wide vertical or horizontal board-and-batten siding. Stone foundation and chimney base (typically local fieldstone). Slate, copper, or cedar shake roofing. Iron hardware (strap hinges, lantern fixtures, balustrade work). The material list is short and the materials are heavy.
Where It Fits in California
Tahoe basin (real snow load, real alpine context). Mammoth Lakes (same). Donner Lake and the Sierra ski-town vernacular. Mt Tam slopes in Marin (no snow but the steep-terrain aesthetic context works). It does not fit suburban Sacramento, San Jose, or Roseville — no terrain, no snow, no architectural context. A chalet in a flat suburban lot reads as costume.
